Working for Accommodation – What kind of work would I be doing?

Each week on popular backpacker job websites such as Backpackerboard, and on the noticeboard section of BBH, there are many  opportunities advertised to ‘work for accommodation’. Usually the work exchange is for 2-3 hours per day but might be more if you get meals provided with your accommodation.

There is a misconception that you will be cleaning in a backpackers. Although this is commonly advertised, there are also a wide variety of other opportunities available.

Here are examples:

  • Working with horses for a few hours a day-
  • Gardening
  • Work a few hours in a cafe every day
  • Building projects
  • IT guru to build a website
  • Horse trekking guide and au pair
  • Night receptionist at backpackers
  • Housekeeping
  • Receptionist at backpackers
  • Childcare/homehelp
  • Tour guides at Napier Prison Backpackers

Positions will sometimes be just accommodation or food and accommodation. Extra such as use of vehicle, free use of laundry, free internet, even free chocolate pudding at night are sometimes included. You might be able to complete your work exchange in the morning and then find paid work in the afternoon/evening. You will sometimes see advertised the opportunity for paid work on top of your work for accommodation hours.

There is WWOOFING, FHINZ and Help Exchange websites that also provide you with the opportunity to work for accommodation.
