Opening a Bank Account

It is very easy to set up a bank account in New Zealand and something that can be completed in approximately 10-20 minutes at most branches. If you like the idea of setting up an account before you arrive in to New Zealand, most banks offer this option, but it is likely to be more hassle than it is worth. You generally will need to show your passport, work visa and another form of ID such as credit card. If you ask for a visa debit card this will mean you can use it as a credit card (without the overdraft).

Kiwibank is a bank we highly recommend. It is one of the few that is New Zealand owned. You can apply for your tax number there as well and there are more branches of Kiwibank than any other bank in New Zealand so chances are it will be in the town you are travelling through or working in.

Other popular banks include: ASB Bank, Westpac, ANZ, BNZ

In Summary:

Wait until you arrive, take your ID in to a bank, ask for a debit card as well as an Eftpos card and enjoy how quick and easy the process is.
