Motels, Lodges & Holiday Parks

New Zealand has a vast range of accommodation options, from 5 star resorts to simple holiday parks that have tent sites and cabins to hire. Most of them need casual or short term staff in particular during their busy season. For most parts of New Zealand this is over the summer period of early November through to late Feb. In ski towns this will mean the months of June through to September or October, depending on the snowfall .
The two most common roles in the accommodation sector are reception work and cleaning or housekeeping. So welcoming people and checking them in and out of their accommodation, or cleaning their rooms and other areas that guests use, such the TV room, kitchen, laundry and ablution block.
In a larger complex like a 4 or 5 star hotel, there will be more specific roles such as a porter (carrying bags to rooms), concierge (answering questions of the hotel guests) and drivers who might collect guests and deliver them to and from the airport.

 What to consider

  • In smaller lodges and holiday parks you may be able to get accommodation provided (likely to be deducted from your pay).
  • In a larger motel you will probably have one specified role such as a porter, cleaner, receptionist while in a smaller provider you could be a jack of all trades, helping in all areas of the business.
  • If you are applying for a housekeeping or cleaning role you will need to have good attention to detail. If ‘she’ll be right’ is your cleaning style, you might not be suited to this role.

 Resources for finding work:

  • Backpacker Board have a wide range of roles listed weekly, especially in holiday parks and lodges (often in some stunning locations).
  • Trade Me and Seek will have listings under their hospitality and tourism category.
  • Contact places directly. Do some research. Choose a part of New Zealand you like the sound and google “accommodation in Wanaka” or “lodges in Queenstown” or “holiday parks in the Coromandel”. Have a read up and then get on the phone and ask to speak to the person responsible for hiring staff.
