Labouring, Handyman & Trades

Labouring work is extremely varied and can include holding up signs at a roadworks, sweeping on a construction site or stacking boxes in a factory. Tradesmen have certain skills like plastering or plumbing or building. A handyman could be weeding in the garden, changing light bulbs in a backpackers or painting someone’s fence. The amount of experience required to get hired will vary from job to job. With the Christchurch earthquakes of 2010/2011 there is an especially high demand for labourers and tradespeople in this region.

 What to consider

  • You may need to invest in some steel cap boots and outdoor clothing. Head to The Warehouse for something inexpensive.
  • Work could be very monotonous (the same thing over and over again) and physically demanding. If you are not used to that, be prepared for muscles to ache in the first week.
  • Work could be weather dependant so put money aside for those days when you will not be earning money.
  • You could be working in a ‘blokey’ kiwi environment. Lots of talk about woman and sport…think of it is a cultural experience.

In Summary:

The work could be the same thing all day long, possibly week after week, but you could also have the flexibility to work very short term and possibly work some long hours to increase the size of your weekly pay check.
