Farm Jobs

We show you the best websites to use to find farm jobs around New Zealand

Farming (agriculture) contributes hugely to the New Zealand economy. Sheep, beef, lamb and dairy products are exported all over the world and you can barely drive 10 minutes in the countryside without coming across a paddock of farm animals. Of all the farm jobs available to backpackers it is dairy farming that is most likely to offer employment.

Thousands of dairy farms jobs need milkers to (usually) milk cows twice a day. One milking will be at around 5am and the afternoon milking at 3pm. You do not require a lot of experience, just an ability to work hard and be reliable to turn up to your job.

The key regions for dairy farming are the Waikato (North Island), Canterbury and Southland (South Island). However, you will find dairy farms all over the country.

 What to consider

  • Farm work can be quite isolating, especially if you do not have a vehicle.
  • Would you be ok to literally get splatters of cow poo on your face, which is a common occurance in a milking shed
  • WWOOFing or FHINZ can be a great way to gain farming knowledge before you apply for a paid position that requires experience.

 Resources for finding work:

  • Backpacker Board each week has new farming positions advertised (usually on dairy farms)
  • Trade Me – search under the Agriculture, Fishing & Forestry category
